I bought a 1969 edition of the Sears, Roebuck &
Co.'s Christmas Wish Book on eBay. It was the year I turned 11 years old, and was also the year of the Apollo 11 moon landing. Remembering
how I eagerly awaited those pages filled with advertisements for model airplanes, boats, guns, Erector sets, and countless other things, I figured
it might be nice to look through one again. Here is the 1969 Montgomery Ward
, too. Enjoy!
Here on page 501 of the Sears 1969 Christmas Wish Book
are Billy Blastoff and accessories. As with the
Major Matt Mason action
figures from Mattel, this fit in perfectly with the Space Race era that surrounded the Apollo 11 landing
on the moon just months before.
"Major Matt Mason was an action figure created by Mattel, an astronaut who lived and worked on the
moon. When introduced in 1966, the figures were initially based on design information found in Life
Magazine, Air Force Magazine, Jane's, and other aviation- and space-interest periodicals. Later, the
line would attempt to transition into the realm of science fiction." -
Use the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics' inflation calculator to see what items cost in today's dollars. That $10.99 Billy
Blastoff Outfit would cost $65.30 in 2010 money.
These are collectibles that can bring a fair price. time to go through your attic!
